How to Protect Yourself from Job Scams

Finding a job can be exciting, but job seekers must stay vigilant against job scams that could lead to financial loss or identity theft. Scammers often disguise themselves as legitimate employers, offering high salaries with minimal effort required. Since 1 August 2025, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) has reported at least 122 cases, with losses exceeding $1.3 million in just 10 days. For further information, you may refer to the official articles published on the SPF website here.

To protect yourself, follow these key tips and the guidelines to ensure a safe job search.

1. How to Identify Job Scams

🔴 Too Good to Be True Offers – If a job promises high salaries with little work, be cautious. Legitimate employers always follow industry pay standards based on skills and experience.

🔴 Vague Job Descriptions – Scammers often provide unclear job details or omit important company information. Always research the employer.

🔴 Requests for Payment – No legitimate employer or recruitment agency will ask for upfront fees for training, applications, or job placement.

🔴 Urgent Hiring Without Interviews – Be skeptical if a recruiter pressures you to make a quick decision without proper verification.

🔴 Suspicious Communication Channels – Be cautious of job offers through Telegram or social media, especially if they avoid official emails or interviews.

2. Safe Job Search Guidelines

✅ Verify the Employer – Always check the company’s legitimacy through MOM’s list of licensed employment agencies or search their business registration on ACRA (Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority).

✅ Be Cautious of Overseas Job Offers – If applying for jobs overseas, ensure that the recruiter is licensed under MOM’s Employment Agency Licensing Framework.

✅ Use Trusted Job Portals – Apply through reputable job platforms or directly on company career pages rather than responding to random job ads.

✅ Check Email Legitimacy – A professional company does not use free email services (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo). Legitimate businesses use official domains.

✅ Report Suspicious Job Offers – If you suspect a scam, report it to MOM via their Scam Alert website or call the ScamShield Helpline at 1799.

✅ Adopt crime prevention measures recommended by Singapore Police Force;

  • ADD – Add the ScamShield App, Alert the Bank of any suspicious activity and Activate Money Lock Feature.
  • CHECK – Check for scam signs with legitimate sources.
  • TELL – Tell friends and report the transactions.

3. What to Do If You’ve Been Scammed

  • Stop all communication with the scammer immediately.
  • Reach out to the bank to halt any transactions.
  • Report the scam to the police, or Singapore’s anti-scam organizations.
  • Warn others by sharing your experience to prevent more victims.
